Inclusion UKInclusion UK is a consortium of four organisations working together for educational and social change for disabled people and their families. The four organisations making up Inclusion UK are: the Alliance for Inclusive Education, the Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education, Disability Equality in Education and Parents for Inclusion. We are leading advocates for inclusive education in the United Kingdom and have formed Inclusion UK to help bring about the social transformation required in implementing inclusive education. On 30th March 2007 the UK government signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Article 24 (Education) of this Convention requires all signatories to ensure that all disabled children and young people can fully participate in the state education system, that this should be an ‘inclusive education system at all levels’, and that this right is to be delivered within an inclusive primary and secondary education system from which disabled people should not be excluded. A new resource poster/leaflet on Article 24 and what it means was sent to every school in the UK and is still available from all the member organisations. In addition to information on the UN Convention, the poster reminds schools of their Duty to Promote Disability Equality under the Disability Discrimination Act 2005. A range of useful resources is listed on the last page of the leaflet. Schools in England can also get a free resource from DCSF: Implementing the Disability Discrimination Act in Schools and Early Years. This is also available for schools in Scotland and Wales to buy. All Inclusion UK organisations provide training and produce resources that can help implement this duty. Please contact us to discuss how we can support you to develop more inclusive provision in your school.
